FishLife Issue 13 Featured Articles – In Sale from Thursday 3rd JULY 2014

A move from the seemingly superb Coffs Coast to the Nambucca Shire on the mid north coast of New South Wales has given Scott Amon an expansive new backyard to explore. In this article he documents his interesting discoveries so far, along with a few mackerel catching tips.

When we heard that Tohatsu had fitted one of their new four strokes to a Makocraft, we sent John Ford to investigate. After touring the Hawkesbury River in a Frenzy 489, he came back pretty impressed with the new combination.

There’s more to the Top End than just barramundi, and one of the most ancient species is in abundance but remains largely underrated by many locals. John Cahill spent a glorious day on Corroboree Billabong in a surface lure saratoga quest, but also found himself utterly distracted by the surrounds.

In this thought provoking piece, Warren Steptoe delves into a subject so basic few people even think about it — the hows, whys and wherefores of holding a rod and reel. Working at the advantages to be gained doesn’t cost a cent, and yet it can make a dramatic difference to results.

EAST KUNDERANG—Bass, Kids, Canoes, and Chaos

While life changing, the arrival of children does not have to spell an end to remote wilderness bass fishing. As Matt Bloomfield explains, there remain opportunities for real wilderness isolation, superb fishing, and breathtaking scenery, with all the comforts and communication required to ensure that the whole family are able to enjoy the experience.

LIGHT ROCK—Finessing the Stones

Fishing lighter from the ocean rocks may seem counter-intuitive, but Starlo argues that the intelligent application of a little more finesse can dramatically improve results, as it does in most other angling scenarios.

With the success of the Isuzu D-MAX, it comes as no real surprise to see the company enter the SUV market with the recent release of the MU-X. David Granville put the new model through its paces and provides his feedback on this diesel seven-seater.

In March this year, Yamaha Australia launched two new, high performance four-stroke outboards onto the local market with the public release of their F115B and F175A motors. Starlo attended the media launch on Queensland’s Gold Coast to report on the event for FishLife.

TOLMAY’S TOY—Contender 23 Open

They say, “Owners are like their dogs.” It could also be said that “Owners are like their boats”, or in this case, “Boats are like their owners”. Certainly in the case of Riley and Laura Tolmay, they live fast lives and as such have always had fast fishing boats. Scott Amon spent some time aboard their latest toy — the Contender 23 Open.
